The Blue Mitted Ragdoll Cat Makes A Wonderful Pet

There are many breeds of cats, but one of them is the ragdoll. This is a beautiful cat and is bred in several different varieties, one of which is the blue mitted ragdoll. First, a brief history and a few details of the standard type, and then an explanation of that particular variety.

In the 1960s, breeder Ann Baker created this class of cat in California. She mated a longhaired white female with Siamese markings with males of similar markings. She picked the kittens with desired colors and patterns from the original litter and generated the standard ragdoll. These trusting felines go limp when picked up and look like a child’s doll with held, thus they got their name.

This breed is generally described as large and pointed, meaning they have a darker color on their ears, tail, and legs, and a mask with a lighter shade. All of these cats have azure eyes. Males average anywhere from fourteen to eighteen pounds, although some altered males can reach twenty pounds or more. Females usually average only nine to thirteen pounds. They are a very slowly maturing stock. Kittens are born pure white and it can take up to two weeks before any color or pattern can be discerned. Also, it may take up to three to four years before the cat has reached full color and weight.

The coat is medium to long in length and is extremely soft and silky. It is low shedding and non-matting, but a regular brushing maintenance of the coat is required. They have a very easy going and relaxed temperament. They enjoy using a scratch post, but they rarely use their claws for self defense. They are very trusting and loyal, well-behaved, and great with children and other pets.

Within this breed are several different versions. They can be bred in many different colors, some of them are seal, chocolate, lilac, and cream. When colors are mixed in particular ways they are known as torte, lynx, or tobie. There are also three categories of patterns including mitted, colorpoint, and bicolor. Any combination of pattern and color can be achieved.

The blue mitted is a very specific type. Blue means a color of slate gray. The tail, ears, and legs will have a dark slate gray color, while the mask will be a lighter shade of gray. The front paws will have white mittens and the back legs will have mid thigh length white boots. White will also be found on the chest, chin, and belly.

Many cats make great pets, but the blue mitted ragdoll is known for its sophistication and good-natured qualities. Cat lovers everywhere will delight over this special breed for all of the amiable characteristics that would make it a wonderful pet for any feline doting home.
