Choosing Your Kitties Litter Box

Your cat’s litter box is a very important decision to make for him/her and is essential for your cat to be happy in your home. The rule of thumb is to have one litter box for each cat in the house. Shallower litter boxes should be used for kittens while deeper litter boxes should be used for bigger cats. Here are some different types of litter boxes available for your cat.

Basic Flat Box – This is the most affordable cat litter box. These litter boxes come in many sizes and depths. They are easy to clean and are preferred by many cats.

Covered Box – We actually prefer the covered box over any other litter box. The covered box has a top that covers the box and gives your cat their own private potty area. An opening at one end allows your cat to enter and exit. Some covered boxes have a swinging door, but we always remove it to keep our cats from being totally confined. Ensure that your cat’s litter box is big enough for them to turn around in and stand fully erect. These boxes are especially recommended if you have a male cat that sprays.

Self Cleaning Boxes – Self Cleaning boxes are litter boxes that are motion activated and clean themselves. Whenever your cat leaves their box a sensor triggers a rake to scoop the matter into a receptacle that can then be emptied. You will need to experiment with different types of litter in these litter boxes. Some cats are afraid of the mechanical action. Check into the product guarantee with these litter boxes.

Sifting Boxes – Sifting Boxes are a little more complicated and are made up of two rectangular pans and a “sifter tray”. The two boxes stack on top of each other with the sifting tray inside the top pan. To clean the box, you the separate the two litter boxes and then lift the sifting tray out which removes the cat waste but leaves clean kitty litter. You can then put the sifter into the empty box and poor the cleaned litter into the box with the sifter. After the waste is dumped you can put the empty litter box in the bottom.
